Guterres 'deeply saddened' by death of Gen Rawat, veteran of UN peacekeeping operations
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is "deeply saddened" by the death of Generl Bipin Rawat, India's Chief of Defence Services and a veteran of UN peacekeeping operations, according to his Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. "He served the United Nations with distinction, and we fully appreciated that work," Dujarric said on Wednesday.Guterres "expresses his heartfelt condolences to the families and the deceased to the people and government of India", he said.
MK Stalin holds meeting with defence officials at Madras Regimental Centre in Wellington
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday visited the Madras Regimental Centre in Wellington and held a meeting with the defence officials present there, informed Chief Minister's Office (CMO). Earlier today, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was also scheduled to visit the spot in the Nilgiris, Coonoor where a Mi-17V5 helicopter of the Indian Air Force carrying Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and 12 others crashed.
Uttarakhand declares three-day mourning
The Uttarakhand government declared a three-day state mourning over the death of Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash on Wednesday. General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others were killed in a helicopter crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, the Indian Air Force said.

Gen Rawat paid last visit to Nagpur in Nov to see prototypes of weaponised drones
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, who died in a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu along with 12 others on Wednesday, had paid his last visit to Nagpur, the second capital of Maharashtra, just less than a month ago. During his visit to the city on November 15, he saw a demonstration of the prototypes of weaponised drones (hexacopter) and loitering munition made by a company here, where he also spoke about non-contact warfare and its restructuring in armed forces. He had come in a helicopter at the equipment maker's campus located on Amravati Road. The equipment was manufactured by the Solar Group of Companies, which includes Solar Industries India Ltd and Economic Explosives Ltd. (PTI)

Subramanian Swamy seeks probe by Supreme Court judge
Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday sought a probe by a senior Supreme Court judge into the helicopter crash near Coonoor that killed India's first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others. The former Union Minister termed the incident as "shocking" and a big caution to national security. (PTI)
The bodies would be brought to Rawat's house on Friday and people would be allowed to pay last respects from 11am to 2pm. The funeral procession will start from Kamraj Marg to Brar Square crematorium in Delhi Cantonment. (ANI)

Tearful uncle recalls Gen Bipin Rawat's last visit to native village
General Bipin Rawat had last visited his native village in Uttarakhand's Pauri district in 2018 and had plans to build a house there after his retirement, his uncle recalled on Wednesday. His uncle Bharat Singh Rawat (70) had gone to Kotdwar for some work but returned home as soon as he heard about the accident. It is only the general's family that lives at Saina village of Dwarikhal block. The general's uncle said people from nearby villages offered condolences to the family with tears in their eyes. He said Bipin Rawat had offered prayers to their "kuldevata" during his last visit to the village in 2018. He left on the same day and had said he would build a house in the village after his retirement, the general's uncle said. (PTI)
CDS Rawat chopper crash: How it happened and who all were on board
CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 others were killed after an IAF chopper carrying them crashed in Tamil Nadu's Ooty on Wednesday. The chopper crashed in apparently foggy conditions, killing 13 out of 14 people on board, the IAF and other officials said. Group Captain Varun Singh is the sole survivor of the crash.
CDS Rawat was making 'necessary adjustments' among three forces: Ex-army chief
Describing Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat as a very good officer from a fine military family, former Army chief General (retd) Shankar Roychowdhury on Wednesday said that he was making "necessary adjustments" among the three forces. Noting that Rawat was one of his cadets when he was the battalion commander in the Indian Military Academy, Roychowdhury said that he is "very sorry" that this has happened. (PTI)
